Óttar, a handsome and arrogant soccer star, casually tells a journalist he’s gay. Imagine the surprise this is to his wife, a former Miss Iceland, his already troubled teenage son, and his father, a macho coach. But, in fact, Óttar just exchanges one sort of domesticity for another in this feisty dramatic comedy by Róbert I. Douglas. When he is kicked off the championship team, Óttar is offered a spot on a team in a basement soccer league that gay sportsmen from all over Iceland soon insist on joining. The ensemble cast is pitch perfect, as is the tone in this lively account of the surprising accommodations people are capable of making.
Born in Reykjavik in 1973, Róbert I. Douglas grew up in Ireland where he attended the Media School in Northern Ireland. His films include Islenski Draumurinn (2000) – his feature film debut – and Eleven Men Out.
