In a deserted stretch of sea sits a rusting oil tanker on which dozens of families have taken up residence. The ship is their home; some of the children have never lived anywhere else. Supplies are bought by selling off barrels of oil still stored in the ship's hull, or stripping parts of the ship itself for scrap. Presiding over this behemoth is the enigmatic Captain Nemat, who, despite his best efforts, can't negate the fact that the ship is sinking, and a plan must be devised to move. Writer/director Mohammad Rasoulof's immensely suggestive tale is at its heart a look at a group of people learning to live in even the most unlikely of circumstances.
Mahammad Rasoulof was born in 1973 in Shiraz, Iran. He received a degree in Sociology from Shiraz University and studied editing at Sooreh University in Tehran. He many a number of short films before he started directing features. His feature films include The Twilight (2002) and Iron Island.
