Can an old friendship rekindle its spark? Kelly Reichardt’s luminous film explores this theme with subtlety and insight. Mark and Kurt, whose lives have gone in different directions, reunite for a weekend camping trip. Kurt is still a free spirit, while Mark has a partner and a baby on the way. But these pals are in a ruminative mood, trying to get hold of a common memory. As the terrain changes from urban to wilderness, so do they, registering a range of emotions that define and redefine their relationship. This affecting study of male bonding is a Whitmanesque exploration of nature, human and elemental, and the idea that old joy can have new connotations.
Miami native Kelly Reichardt studied at Massachusetts College of Art and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She made some of the first Super-8 music videos to air on MTV and currently teaches film at NYU. Her films include River of Grass, Ode, Then a Year and Old Joy.
