In the Philippines, John-John is a mischievous tyke who has been under the foster care of Thelma and her family for most of his three years. Hard-working and respected in her field, Thelma—Foster Mother of the Year, several times—must prepare John-John today to meet the American couple that is going to adopt him. Brillante Mendoza’s heart-rending Foster Child is a powerful look at the end of the baby business cycle, and a cool and sober study that avoids sensationalism but never lets you forget the emotional toll the adoption business takes on all of these characters. Brillante Mendoza was born in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. He has worked as a production designer on feature films, television, and theater. Javier Beltrán Ramos studied filmmaking at Universidad Central de Venezuela. He received an award from the National Center of Cinematography of Venezuela (CNAC) for The Wind’s Stories.
