The scattered thirtysomething women in Barbara Albert’s freshly astute, femme-centric film come together for the funeral of an influential former teacher (for some, a lover as well). Life apart has weakened their links to one another: One’s a driven businesswoman, another a glamorous actress, yet another has been battered by hard times and arrives with a sullenly forbearing teenage daughter in tow. Afterwards, they continue to hang out, sharing an impromptu adventure that includes crashing one of the craziest, nothing-goes-as-planned wedding scenes in the cinematic repertory. Working once again with a group of actors that has become a kind of personal ensemble company, Albert (Free Radicals NYFF ‘03) has emerged as one of Europe’s finest new-generation filmmakers, continuing to refine her assured, generous storytelling voice.
