Our Daily Bread

OUR DAILY BREAD
Series: The 44th New York Film Festival [Sept 29 - Oct 15 2006]
Director: Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Country: Austria, Release: 2006, Runtime: 92

Precisely how the food we eat is harvested, slaughtered, quartered and packaged is the subject of this brilliant poetic documentary by Austrian director Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Pripyat NYFF ’99). Taking a leaf from contemporary German photography, the film is less an outraged exposé than a bemused meditation on the surreality of modern life, crammed with spellbinding images that hover between the monumental and the quietly sinister.

The central figures in Geyrhalter’s film are the machines, which handle vegetables and grains, meat and fish, with an astonishing combination of otherworldly grace and efficiency. Our Daily Bread achieves what all great documentaries do: It forces us to face the reality of our human practices. If you wanna eat, this is what it takes to get the food on the table.
