Jazz and film grew up together, and there is a rich history of jazz performances captured on film, as well as many films with jazz soundtracks. Jazz pianist and scholar Lewis Porter hosts an evening that explores the relationship between these two great American art forms. The evening will include rare film clips of classic jazz performances by artists such as Eubie Blake, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Stan Getz. Porter and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon will demonstrate and discuss the influence of jazz on film scores, and will be joined by filmmakers discussing the inspiration they’ve drawn from jazz, and how they’ve documented jazz cinematically. The program will be illustrated by short films, including D.A. Pennebaker's Daybreak Express (1953) and a rare early short by Roman Polanski.
A kick-off event for National Video Resources' Looking at: Jazz, a screening and discussion series funded by NEH and in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Event at Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street between Broadway & Amsterdam Avenues on the plaza level.
