Submissions to The New York Film Festival

Open to entries from all filmmakers, regardless of experience. Please note, however, that entries to the New York Film Festival (NYFF) tend to include works by many well-established filmmakers, meaning that the level of competition to get a film accepted is very high. A special section of the NYFF is Views from the Avant-Garde which premieres non-narrative, experimental film and video. You may not submit to both the main Festival and the Avant-Garde section, you must chose one.

Application forms for NYFF will be available late May. The deadline for submissions is early July. The deadline is the date we need to have RECEIVED your entry. Please submit the most finished version of your film by the deadline. We will only accept ONE version of your film. Please do NOT send a second copy, regardless any changes that have been made.

Eligibility Requirements

Presentation format is 35mm and 16mm film only.

Work shot on video is considered if the final format is on 16mm or 35mm film with composite optical sound.

Films being considered for Opening and Closing Nights must be North American premieres. All other films must be New York City premieres. With the exception of other film festivals, films must not have had any announced prior public exhibition or distribution, theatrically or on commercial, educational or cable television in the U.S.A. The Festival reserves the right to waive this rule in the case of small non-commercial showings.

Films in a language other than English must be subtitled in English.

Films submitted in any previous year may not be resubmitted.

The Festival reserves the right to decide all questions not specifically provided for in the regulations.

Procedures

Please mail your application along with a preview copy of your film on VHS (NTSC or PAL) or DVD (all regions). If you have a press kit please include it. Do NOT send posters or other oversize press material. Due to the number of entries we receive for each festival, we are not able to return preview tapes or DVDs or publicity materials.

To submit a film print or digibeta to The New York Film Festival call 212-875-5628 before the submission deadline. Once the film is viewed, you can pick up the print or have the festival use your FedEx, UPS, or DHL number for the return shipping. We do NOT pay for the shipping costs during the selection process.

For submission purposes only, foreign films without English subtitles can be considered if accompanied by an English dialogue list.

If you wish to be notified of the receipt of your submission, please include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope with your entry. We will send the envelope back when you submission arrives. Alternatively, you can send your entry using a mail service with tracking capability such as UPS, FedEx, or registered mail. You may also call us at 212-875-5166, but please wait at least ONE WEEK after the deadline has passed.

You may drop off your entry in person at the security desk in our lobby. Please put “Film Society of Lincoln Center” on the package The security desk is open 24 hours a day. It is located in the lobby of the Rose Building, 165 West 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam on the plaza level.
