The 12th New York Asian Film Festival is well underway, and we’ve already seen tons of exciting premieres, Q&As, and events. Don’t let festival fatigue set in; here’s part two of our handy festival guide!

Mystery, screening tomorrow, is Chinese director Lou Ye’s seventh film, though only the second to screen in his home country. That in itself was a huge accomplishment as the film, which premiered at Cannes, has been subject to drawn out censorship battles between the filmmaker and the Chinese government over its frank depiction of violence. The Asian Film Awards Best Film-winner depicts the breakdown of a marriage in the face of infidelity. Film Society is proud to host the North American premiere of this acclaimed film.

The July 4th weekend will see screenings of a wide range of films, from exploitation flicks to crazy comedy. On the 4th, itself, fans of superstart Chow Yun-fat can check out The Last Tycoon, a period piece about a real-life criminal whose history has been officially banned as a source of study by the Chinese government, Du Yuesheng. Producer and cinematographer Andrew Lau will appear in person for a Q&A.

Drop by Saturday to catch two of the festival’s wildest flicks: Hardcore Comedy and Woman Revenger. Hardcore Comedy, which recently made FilmLinc Daily’s list of the festival’s craziest trailers, is a multipart omnibus picture that tests the bounds of taste, with nonstop action, narcotics, erotica, and iced tea. The film’s star, Dada Chen, will be on hand for a Q&A and will, hopefully, be able to explain it to us. Stop by earlier in the day to see Woman Revenger, part of NYAFF’s spotlight on Taiwan Black Movies. This early 80s grindhouse picture tells the story of a gentle woman who becomes a bloodthirsty killer. Director Tsai Yang-Ming will be at the Film Society for a Q&A after the screening.

The following week will include tons of great films, though we at FilmLinc Daily are particularly excited about Cold War, which will make its New York premiere on Wednesday. The film was a 2012 box office hit in Asia, and swept the Hong Kong Film Awards, winning Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best New Performer. Directed by Sunny Luk and starring Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai, the police procedural combines thrilling action and storytelling with political commentary.

NYAFF continues at the Film Society through July 11. Check out the series page for a full list of the remaining films!Â
