Andrei Tarkovsky Archive To Be Auctioned Off

Yesterday, The Guardian announced plans on the part of London's Sotheby's to put up for auction a vast collection of letters, notes, book drafts, photographs, and more from the private archives of Russian filmmaker/author/philosopher/mystic/god Andrei Tarkovsky. The listing includes early drafts of screenplays, audio recordings from late in Tarkovsky's life, and the director's emotionally fraught correspondance with the authorities who stymied his creative possibilities at home and ultimately drove him into exile. Even if you aren't about to fly to London and/or pay upwards of 100,000 pounds for the collection, it's wonderful news to hear that this material exists, and that it might conceivably be available for exhibition or reproduction. Keep your fingers crossed…

Turin Film Festival Announces Lineup

Italy's Turin film festival is set to kick off November 21, and as Hollywood Reporter, um, reports, the lineup is out in the open! After an opening screening of Dustin Hoffman's debut feature Quartet, the festival will host a total of 223 films, including past Film Society guests Ginger and Rosa, Anna Karenina, and Ruby Sparks. The 16-film competition lineup consists entirely of first or second features and includes this summer's dreamy, evocative BAMcinemaFest hit Pavilion. Lifetime achievement awards are set to go out to pioneering British social-realist Ken Loach and veteran Italian filmmaker (and eight-time Palme d'Or nominee) Ettore Scola, whose work we'll also be celebrating with a double feature later this month.

Nothing But a Man Opens in New York This Friday

Michael Roemer's 1964 independent feature Nothing but a Man, a portrait of African-American married life in the early sixties, received rapturous acclaim in the wake of its appearance at this year's NYFF—and now it's coming to Film Forum for a weeklong run. A friend came back from a press screening a few weeks ago and told me only that “it is a human necessity to see this movie.” So you should probably see it.
