The British Academy unveiled their nominations Wednesday with Gravity leading the pack of nods with 11 including Best Picture, Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón and Best Actress for Sandra Bullock, while NYFF debut 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle both tied with nominations in ten categories. Both films are vying for Best Picture and Best Director. NYFF51 World Premiere Captain Phillips, meanwhile, will also compete for best film, while Paul Greengrass is up for Best Director. Tom Hanks who plays the starring role in the feature, is nominated for Best Actor, going up against fellow NYFF51 leads Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) in addition to Christian Bale for American Hustle and Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf Of Wall Street. Wolf's Martin Scorsese was named in the best director category Wednesday.

A favorite for an Oscar nomination next week, NYFF honoree Cate Blanchett received a BAFTA nom for Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. Others receiving nods in the category include Amy Adams (American Hustle), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) and Judi Dench (Philomena).

In the Documentary category, New Directors/New Films '13 feature The Act Of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer as well as NYFF51 feature Tim's Vermeer received nods along with Alex Gibney's The Armstrong Lie. Gibney's fellow 2013 release, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks is also nominated in the category as well as Gabriela Cowperthwaite's Blackfish.

The Act Of Killing also received a nomination in the non-English-language category along with Cannes Palme d'Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color by Abdellatif Kechiche, Paolo Sorrentino's Oscar shortlisted The Great Beauty, Saudi Arabia's Wadjda and the U.K.'s foreign-language Oscar entry, Metro Manila.
