The international film community and cinephiles everywhere set their clocks by the Cannes Film Festival. Acclaimed international auteurs anchor the lineup for the annual festival and then there are less familiar names that round out the prestigious roster each year.
These are the films that fans of cinema will be talking about for the next year or so.
For the 64th edition of the French festival organizers have invited new films from Pedro Almodovar, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the Dardenne Brothers, Bruno Dumont, Robert Guediguian, Hong Sang-Soo, Aki Kaurismaki, Eric Khoo, Kim Ki-Duk, Terrence Malick, Takashi Miike, Nanni Moretti, Gerardo Naranjo, Lynne Ramsay, Paolo Sorrentino, Lars Von Trier.
Notably, a pair of first-timers are in competition: Julia Leigh's Sleeping Beauty and Markus Schleinzer's Michael. While in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, two more directorial debuts will be showcased: Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene (a hit from this year's Sundance Film Festival), and Juliana Rojas & Marco Dutra's Hard Labor.
The festival will open with Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris on May 11th and continue through May 22nd in the South of France.
