We’ve been working towards the launch of our new, high-tech Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center for many years now. While it officially opens to the public on June 17, we’re thrilled to announce a program of free screenings and events from June 10 to 12 to celebrate our new venue.
But first, let us point you towards the New York Times piece that highlights David Rockwell’s design of the building itself, taking an old garage and office space and transforming it into a state-of-the-art venue with two movie theaters and an amphitheater, featuring a 152” Pansonic Plasma screen (the largest of its kind on public display in the country). With the Walter Reade Theater still going strong on the other side of 65th street, the Film Society is about to expand its program in a big way – so we’re inviting you to usher in this new era with us.
We have so many events planned for these three days, it’s hard to know where to start. There will be a 12-hour movie marathon of NYFF classics, like Pulp Fiction and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (when’s the last time you saw them on the big screen?). Confirmed guests include: Jason Reitman presenting Carnal Knowledge with Mike Nichols, Holberg Prize winner Fredric Jameson talking about the future of film, Kevin Smith presenting a screening and discussion of the ‘80s comedy classic Valley Girl, and Paul Schrader discussing a newly restored print of Bertolucci’s classic The Conformist – among others.
