Calin Peter Netzer's Romanian family drama Child's Pose won the Golden Bear best picture prize today as the Berlin Film Festival drew to a close in the German capital. The film was chosen from a roster of 19 films by a jury lead this year by filmmaker Wong Kar Wai. It stars Luminita Gheorghiu as a domineering parent facing family adversity.

Accepting the award on stage tonight in Berlin with director Calin Peter Netzer, Child's Pose producer Ada Solomon celebrated the prize as a triumph over adversity for women and the international art house cinema movement.

Standing in front of jury president Wong Kar Wai and alongside Netzer, Solomon seized the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of many women in front of and behind the camera at this year's Berlin festival. She also criticized the Romanian government for cutting financial support of moviemaking in her country saying that she and director Netzer would not have been able to make the same film today. Solomon implored officials back home to realize that Romanian cinema is an ambassador for the country around the world.

Producer Ada Solomon said she feared commercial censorship against international art house cinema and praised the industry of sales agents, distributors and exhibitors who connect these movies with audiences. Finally, she saved a few words for those who did not back the film.

Solomon thanked “those that didn't support us and didn't believe in us and made us stronger and more determined.”

David Gordon Green won the best director prize for his latest, Prince Avalanche, while Danis Tanovic's An Episode in the Life of An Iron Picker was a double award winner in Berlin.
