Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty.

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty won the top prize at the European Film Awards Saturday night in Berlin. The Cannes premiere, about a once celebrated writer who traverses Rome's nightlife and beautiful people, also took Best Director and Best Actor for Toni Servillo. The Great Beauty is Italy's entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar consideration.

In other prizes, European Comedy, meanwhile went to Susanne Bier's Love Is All You Need, while Jan Ole Gerster's Oh Boy took the European Discovery award. New Directors/New Films feature The Act of Killing took the best documentary award.

Over 2,900 members of the European Film Academy – filmmakers from across Europe – voted for this year’s European Film Awards.
