Press play on an exclusive clip from our upcoming new release Ilo Ilo. The first feature film from Singaporean director Anthony Chen opens here on Friday with the filmmaker in person for Q&As after the 6:45pm screenings on Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5.

Ilo Ilo won the Camera d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festval, screened to critical praise at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and was Singapore's official submission to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Even Ang Lee is a fan, calling the film “an amazing debut, full of heart and intelligence.”

Ilo Ilo
Anthony Chen, Singapore, 2013, 99m

Set in Singapore during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Ilo Ilo chronicles the day-to-day drama of the Lim family—troublesome grade-schooler Jiale and his overstressed parents. Comfortably middleclass and with another baby on the way, they hire Teresa, a Filipino immigrant, as a live-in maid and nanny. An outsider in both the family and Singapore itself, Teresa initially struggles to manage Jiale's antics and find her footing in her new community. The two eventually form a unique bond, but just as Teresa becomes an unspoken part of the family, unforeseen circumstances in an uncertain economy will challenge the new normal yet again.
