While Latinbeat is in full force this weekend at the Walter Reade Theater with debates, special screenings and new discoveries from across Latin America, across the street at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center we’ve extended the runs of some of the hottest movies of the summer. Mysteries of Lisbon, from Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, has been praised as a singular work of art – an opus that is over four hours, yet never feels too long. (Don't worry, there's an intermission for bathroom breaks and grabbing quick snacks!) Kenji Fujishima, who wrote about the film when it played last year at the New York Film Festival, said “It's rare that one can say for a film that every single shot is a triumph of imagination and execution, but such is the case with Mysteries of Lisbon; even when you might find your attention wavering at certain points from the stories being told, Ruiz gives us something to marvel at in each shot.”

Mysteries of Lisbon has been so popular that we’ve added an extra 2:30pm show, in addition to the 1:00 and 6:30 screenings. Watch it this weekend at the Film Center, which is the only place it's playing in New York. Distributor Music Box Films is even hosting a contest to win a trip to Portugal, which you can enter here.

Also screening at the Film Center is Miranda July’s The Future, which Richard Brody of The New Yorker calls “a major work of art.” Critics describe it as a fresh, contemporary and unexpectedly deep film that is a major step forward forward for July. The Future is screening at 7:30 and 9:30pm.

Finally, John Turturro’s Passione has been such a huge success at the Film Center that the discount screenings in the Amphitheater are still going strong. Turturro himself will be on hand to answer audience questions following the 6:20pm screening tomorrow (August 13), so don’t miss your chance to hear from the director himself of what A.O. Scott of The New York Times called “a vibrant, impressionistic tour of the musical traditions of Naples, Italy.”

It’s been a busy summer at the Film Center, and we’re excited about our upcoming new releases: René Féret’s speculative period drama Mozart’s Sister will begin on August 19, and the New Directors/New Films hit Circumstance starts its run on August 26. If you still haven’t seen our new Film Center, there’s never been a better time to come check it out – and see a good movie while you’re at it!
