The first film imagined by the great Jorge Luis Borges directly for the cinema, Hugo Santiago's Invasion deals with a ragtag group mounting resistance in a city under perpetual threat. First released in 1969, this restoration brings the long forgotten update of The Iliad to a new generation. Our special Masterworks series “Velvet Bullets and Steel Kisses: Celebrating the Nikkatsu Centennial” continues with another screening of Tange Sazen and Pot Worth a Million Ryo (8:45pm, Howard Gilman Theater, RUSH TICKETS AVAILABLE!*) as well as Earth (6:20pm, Howard Gilman Theater, RUSH TICKETS AVAILABLE!*), Tomo Uchida’s legendary portrait of peasants, shot over several seasons in northern Japan, galvanizing its docudrama with innovations from Soviet and German cinema.
