Hamlet

Today the Film Society of Lincoln Center's look back at the 50-year history of the New York Film Festival continues. Each week until the 50th edition of the festival in 2012 we will present a film from a different year of NYFF's past. This week, the Film Society will be screening Grigori Kozintsev's adaptation of Hamlet, from the second New York Film Festival in 1964.

Kozintsev's Hamlet started as a staged performance in 1954 at Leningrad's Pushkin Theatre. His take on the classic was based on a translation by Doctor Zhivago author Boris Pasternak. Kozintsev drastically changed it for the film version, condensing the text and focusing less on the title character's inner struggles and more on his political standing. Brilliantly acted, beauifully shot, and featuring an original score by Dimitri Shostakovich, this is a Hamlet like no other and should not be missed.

“50 Years of the New York Film Festival” will continue on Tuesday, October 25 (and every Tuesday after that) with Marco Bellocchio’s Fists in the Pocket, from the third edition of the festival in 1965.
