On Tuesday, the Film Society of Lincoln Center's year-long series “50 Years of the New York Film Festival” continues with an offering from the third festival in 1965, Marco Bellocchio’s explosive debut feature Fists in the Pocket.

Fists in the Pocket is a unique family tragedy with a healthy dose of the macabre. Mockingly ferocious, blasphemous, and subversive, it mounts a frontal assault on family values and Catholic morality. The film, which documents a young provincial man’s annihilating rage, encompasses matricide, fratricide, and incest, mocks the institutions of church and family, and generally raises hell. Premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival, Fists in the Pocket dropped like a bomb on the quiet world of a mid-sixties Italian cinema still under the spell of humanistic, postwar neorealism. It catapulted the 26-year-old Bellocchio to international fame, establishing him as the great psychologist of Italian cinema, and it is still regarded as one of the great works of that country's rich film history.

”50 Years of the New York Film Festival” will continue on Tuesday, November 1 (and every Tuesday after that) with Carlos Saura's The Hunt, from the fourth edition of the festival in 1966.
