Our weekly celebration of “50 Years of the New York Film Festival” continues Tuesday with Eric Rohmer's My Night at Maud’s from the seventh festival in 1969.
My Night at Maud's is the third part of writer/director Eric Rohmer's acclaimed “Six Moral Tales” series, featuring men forced to resist their feelings when tempted by other lovers. In this film, a snowstorm forces a man infatuated by a beautiful woman he saw at church to find shelter with Maud, a charming divorcée. It was Rohmer's second feature-length film, and a sign of the powerful body of work ahead. Rohmer's sophomore film was screened at both the Cannes and New York Film Festivals and earned the filmmaker two Academy Award nominations. Dealing with themes such as Catholicism, love, morality, and philosophy, this powerful film was called “one of the most influential and talked-about films of the decade” by Criterion.
Our year-by-year survey of the 50-year history of NYFF will continue on Tuesday, November 29 (and every Tuesday after that) with Ken Loach's Kes from the eighth edition of the festival in 1970.
