Uncle Howard tells the story of filmmaker Howard Brookner (Burroughs: the Movie) through contemporary interviews and recently rediscovered footage. The documentary, created by Howard’s nephew, Aaron Brookner, is a moving look back at an artist and a past era. In the following Q&A from the New York Film Festival, Brookner is joined by producer Paula Vaccaro and NYFF Selection Committee Member Amy Taubin to discuss the process of making the film, his own memories of Howard, and the downtown arts scene of the 1970s and 1980s as memorialized in the film. Uncle Howard opens in select theaters this Friday.
