Gus Van Sant’s new film, Restless, will open the Un Certain Regard section at the upcoming Festival de Cannes. The section kicks off on May 12th in the South of France, the night after the festival opens with Woody Allen’s latest film, Midnight in Paris. The film, an examination of the relationship of two teenagers, stars Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hooper.

Van Sant is a Cannes festival fixture, having won the Palme d’Or in 2003 for Elephant. He was last at the fest with Paranoid Park four years ago. Fellow Cannes fest alum Emir Kusturica is the President of the jury for year Un Certain Regard section.

Cannes organizers are slated to announce the full lineup for the 2011 festival tomorrow.
