Shortly after the opening of I Am Not Your Negro at the Film Society, director Raoul Peck joined the Film Society’s Deputy Director Eugene Hernandez for an extended Q&A about the film, which made history that weekend as the highest-grossing opening ever at the Film Society. This Q&A marked Peck’s second appearance at the Film Society in the past year, the first was for a Q&A after the film’s premiere in the Spotlight on Documentary section of the 54th New York Film Festival.

In the discussion above, Peck talks about his personal relationship with the words of writer James Baldwin and recommends a good place to start for those unfamiliar with Baldwin. In addition, Peck weighs in on his approach to crafting this unique film, where its inspiration came from, and why it was important to tell his story in a documentary.
