Mr. Gaga, which screened here last week as part of the New York Jewish Film Festival, is a film of passion and dedication from Israeli director Tomer Heymann. The film centers on Ohad Naharin, renowned choreographer and artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company, and creator of an innovative and exciting movement language known as Gaga. Using intimate rehearsal footage, extensive unseen archival materials, and stunning dance sequences, Heymann tells the fascinating story of an artistic genius who redefined the language of modern dance.

After the screening, he sat down for a Q&A with Aviva Weintraub, the festival director. The two discussed the deliberation over the first and last frames of the film, his initial hesitance about dance, why he thinks films can go deeper without subtitles, and much more. Mr. Gaga opens here at the Film Society on Wednesday, February 1, with Heymann and his brother, Barak (also the film’s producer), returning for Q&As on opening weekend.
