Mistress America
Hot on the heels of While We’re Young, director Noah Baumbach gives us another manic romp, this time reteaming with Frances Ha co-writer/star Greta Gerwig, further establishing them as masters of the contemporary screwball comedy. When her freshman college experience proves it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, aspiring writer Tracy (Lola Kirke) wonders if life in New York City is really worth the effort—until she meets her prospective sister-in-law Brooke (Gerwig), a spirited entrepreneur and force of nature who invites Tracy to tag along with her to sundry parties and hot spots. But when Brooke’s absentee boyfriend/financier backs out of their plan to open a restaurant, she brings Tracy and her college friends along on a madcap mission to Connecticut to secure the money. Energized by rapid-fire repartee and showcasing Gerwig’s ace comic timing, Mistress America is a tour de force of verbal and physical comedy, and one of Baumbach’s funniest films to date. A Fox Searchlight release.
