Bonds of blood and friendship are tested in Satyajit Ray’s impassioned adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, with model citizen Dr. Gupta (Soumitra Chatterjee) at the center of it all. The local water supply is rank with germs, and the temple and tourist hot-spot is at the heart of the pollution. But when the good doctor tries to warn others about the sullied holy water he becomes a villain, not a hero. Print courtesy of the Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection at the Academy Film Archive.
