“Miss Garland is someone to reckon with. Of all the youngsters who have graduated into mature roles in recent years, she has the surest command of her form of make believe”
—The New York Herald Tribune
With Judy in her first adult role—and winning solo star billing over the title—For Me and My Gal also marked the screen debut for Gene Kelly. George Murphy, Marta Eggerth, Ben Blue, Lucille Norman, Richard Quine, and Keenan Wynn offer exemplary supporting turns.
But it’s Garland’s picture, from “After You’ve Gone” to the rousing World War I hits employed to inspire audiences at the onset of World War II. Director Berkeley later cited this celebration of vaudeville and USO troupers as his favorite film.
