The posters promise “a totally twisted deep-fried Texas trailer park murder story,” and believe us when we say this is one of those rare cases of truth in advertising. Following their successful collaboration on 2006’s Bug, Oscar-winning director William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) and Pulitzer- and Tony-winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County) reteam for this even wilder, woollier and more darkly comic concoction about a small-time drug dealer (Emile Hirsch) who, together with his layabout father (Oscar-nominee Thomas Haden Church), plots the murder of his shrewish stepmother (Gina Gershon) for a $50,000 life insurance policy. To do the grisly deed, they enlist the titular Joe (the brilliant Matthew McConaughey), a police detective who moonlights as a hitman, and who could be the spawn of Johnny Cash and the Devil himself. A long and stormy night of double and triple crosses ensues, culminating in a dinner scene Buñuel would have loved. This much is certain: you’ll never be able to look at a fried chicken leg in quite the same way again!
