Garland, Mickey Rooney, vampy June Preisser, and a host of talented teens form a swing orchestra and compete in Paul Whiteman’s national “big band” radio contest. En route, they put on a school dance, stage a fund-raising melodrama, and pay for the life-saving operation of a fellow student.

The title song is a Gershwin classic, but Roger Edens wrote the new numbers, including the heartfelt “Our Love Affair.” Busby Berkeley shot the first half of the six-minute “Do the La Conga” in one practiced take.
