Two Films by Jon Jost Friday, October 24, 7:00 and 9:00pm Innovative, unexpected, perceptive—the films of Jon Jost belong to that rare group of independent works that continually challenge filmmaking styles and conventions. We’re delighted to welcome him to the Walter Reade Theater with this program of two recent works. Oui Non Jon Jost, France/Italy/USA, 2001; 76m “In program notes, Jost indicates that this film was made for $500, but that everyone had a good time. Sounds like a deal to us!” – Time Out New York “Oui Non is simultaneously a fictional narrative, a simple boy-meets-girl story, which is also a critique of the fictional narrative form. It is the confrontation of the falsity of fiction—the story which reveals in a certain order, which conveys a sense of an order to life, colliding with the reality of life: that life is a disordered mess about which the only narrative certainty is that it will end in death....Oui Non plays with this, makes homage to many things Parisian, from Eugene Atget, to Degas and Lautrec, to Monet and Manet, to French films, to the mythos of Parisian romance, and along the way is trapped in its own real reality in which the narrative story imposed collapsed in the face of the lives of its actors and maker. It is a romantic comedy which is really a tragedy.”—Jon Jost Fri Oct 24: 7:00pm Over Here Jon Jost, USA, 2007; 76m “Over Here was a collaboration between myself, the actors—most of whom are locals in Portland…and between myself and Portland, its setting, and the time it was made in. For America in 2006 it was finally clear to most people that the country had been had by the shrill minority of the neo-cons, and that the war in Iraq, along with many other destructive things of the present time were predicated on lies, and had brought us only very predictable tragedies, ones which returned home in the form of living vets, whose souls had been unhinged by the brutality of the war they'd been sent, and re-sent again, to fight while America was encouraged to run up the credit card and shop….The film was made in 10 very casual days in which shooting was normally confined to a few hours, or some days none. There was no script at all, and the story, to the degree there is one, was developed in process of shooting. Being a film of tonality and atmosphere, what was important was to find the right settings, weather, light—and then to insert the actors into those and let them and myself find the appropriate cues.
