Solitary Fragments / La soledad
Series: Spanish Cinema Now
Director: Jaime Rosales, Country: Spain, Release: 2007, Runtime: 128

Adela lives a quiet, mundane existence in northern Leon, caring for her son Miguelito and looking after her aging father. Hoping for more from life, she moves with her son to Madrid, sharing an apartment with a couple, Ines and Carlos. And then the unimaginable happens...
Following his impressive debut The Hours of the Day, Jaime Rosales more than lives up to the high expectations with Solitary Fragments. He divides this narrative into two sections, with the second part seemingly independent of the first until connections and resonances are gradually revealed. The result is an unsettling portrait of characters struggling against feelings of isolation that threaten to engulf them at any minute. The acting is uniformly excellent, but special mention must be made of Petra Martinez, who plays Antonia, mother of Adela’s flatmate Ines and the focus of the film’s second part.
