With the release of her second film The Cuenca Crime forbidden by the courts, Miró embarked on this decided change of pace. Gary Cooper, Who Art in Heaven tells the story of Andrea Soriano (Mercedes Sampietro), a 40ish television director who is about to undergo a serious operation. Hiding the truth of her medical condition, she pays visits to those closest to her: her mother, current lover, a former lover and other friends. Caught up with their own lives or problems, most pay little attention to her, convincing Andrea that she can only depend on herself.
With Gary Cooper, Miró established the jagged emotional rhythms that would characterize so much of her best work: Andrea could be seen as the prototype of the Miró protagonist who continually changes her mind, switches gears, and above all, is unwilling to face up to obvious realities. Yet, it is these flaws that make so many of Miró’s characters so complex — and so memorable.
