A Taste of Honey
Series: Leading the Charge: Woodfall Film Productions and the Revolution in '60s British Cinema [July 2007]
Director: Tony Richardson, Country: United Kingdom, Release: 1961, Runtime: 100

The transformation of the British theater heralded by John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger was furthered by Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey. The play also seemed a natural undertaking for Woodfall, then synonymous with this new wave in British cinema. Rita Tushingham plays Jo, a teenager who spends a night with a black sailor while on holiday with her mother and boyfriend. Weeks later, Jo discovers she’s pregnant. Kicked out by her mother—who by this time has married her boyfriend—Jo forms a tenuous relationship with Geoffrey (Murray Melvin), a gay man who works with her at a shoe store.

For Geoffrey, the prospect of actually settling down with the girl promises the stability he’s been wanting. For Jo, it seems life is closing down before she’s had a chance to live it. With is frank inclusion of interracial sex and homosexuality, A Taste of Honey was amazingly bold, yet what remains as powerful as ever is the extraordinary complexity of its characters; Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin both won acting awards at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival.
