Colin Smith (Tom Courtenay) robs a bakery and is sent to Ruxton Towers, a juvenile detention facility, or “borstal.” There, the school’s Governor (Michael Redgrave), a brutal man who feels his charges must be broken and re-built as responsible citizens, admires Colin’s talent as a distance runner, selecting him to represent Ruxton Towers in an upcoming track meet. Influenced by experiments with film narrative, Richardson fragments the story, interspersing Colin’s life in the borstal with scenes leading up to the act that landed him there, offering insights into his character that lay the groundwork for the film’s much-discussed ending.
