The Twelfth Annual Views from the Avant-Garde A Special Showcase of the 46th New York Film Festival
October 3 - 5, 2008
Curated by Mark McElhatten and Gavin Smith.
Since 1992, the October programs at the Walter Reade Theater have coincided with our New York Film Festival, and one festival program virtually synonymous with the Walter Reade is the annual Views from the Avant-Garde, a two-day feast of new (and sometimes older) works pushing the boundaries and challenging the definition of what we know as cinema. Curated by Mark McElhatten and Gavin Smith, this year’s edition will unveil new work by James Benning, Nathaniel Dorsky, Craig Baldwin and Leslie Thornton, among many others, along with a tribute to the late avant-garde pioneer Bruce Conner. A very special event will be the premiere of a newly restored version of French Situationist and provocateur extraordinaire Guy Debord’s legendary 1978 masterpiece In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni, a passionate attack against our increasingly media-driven society.
