A Woman’s Vengeance
Series: Charles Boyer and The Art of Seduction [May 23 – 27]
Director: Zoltan Korda, Country: USA, Release: 1948, Runtime: 96

Aldous Huxley wrote the screenplay for A Woman’s Vengeance, based on his short story and play The Gioconda Smile. It is a literary film in the best sense: beautifully written and forcefully directed by the third Korda brother. Henry Maurier (Charles Boyer) is the kind of country squire who can handle his invalid wife, Emily (Rachel Kempson, mother to Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave), and a younger mistress, Doris (Ann Blyth), without compunction. But when Emily dies, followed by Henry’s hasty remarriage to Doris despite a confession of love from Janet Spence (Jessica Tandy), suspicions of murder rise. As Henry languishes in jail, the family doctor (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) presses a nosy nurse (Mildred Natwick) for an answer to a burning question: did Henry do it?

The excellent black-and-white cinematography is by Russell Metty, with a score by Miklós Rózsa. For those interested in seeing how a woman scorned reacts to rebuff, watch the extraordinary Jessica Tandy become a cold-hearted avenger.
