Jour de fête
Jacques Tati, France, 1949/1995; 104m
Jacques Tati (1908–1982) always intended to make both a black-and-white and color version of this humorous tale of an inept village postman (Tati) who goes to extremes to speed his mail deliveries by bicycle, with some amazing (and hilarious) results. However, the Thomson color stock available to him in 1947 failed to achieve his desired results. The film was released in 1949 only in black and white. After Tati’s death, Sophie Tatischeff, his daughter and a film editor, retrieved the original reels and together with Francois Ede, accomplished her father’s dream: A restored, full-color version of Jour de fête was released in France and briefly in the U.S. in 1995. We are showing this version in a 35mm print. Special thanks to Philippe Gigot of Les Films de Mon Oncle and Sarah Finklea of Janus Films. Chicago Reader film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, who had the privilege of interviewing Tati, will introduce the film at the Jan. 6 screening.
