Program 7: Classic Shorts
Series: Dance on Camera Festival 2008
Director: Various, Runtime: 69

Reines d’un jour
Pascal Magnin, Switzerland, 1996; 28m
Gifted filmmaker Pascal Magnin inspired a wave of interest in the concept of dance on camera when his films were first shown in the Dance on Camera Festival. In tribute to his influence and on the eve of First Run Features’ release of a second DVD compilation of Dance on Camera shorts, we present two of Magnin’s best works with a selection of favorite dance films.
In Reines d’un jour, six urban twenty-somethings frolic on the mountain slopes of the Alps, among cows and villagers, caught between Heaven and Earth. This strikingly visual and sensual dance is a delightful ode to the beauty of nature, choreographed by Marie-Louise Colo and Christine Kung.

screening with

Contrecoups
Pascal Magnin, Switzerland, 1998; 23m
Choreographer Guilherme Botelho adapted for the screen this urban ballet, in which two men and a woman battle with their inner demons.

Cargo
Kelly Hargraves, US, 2007; 4m
Dark, funny and always sexy, Cargo highlights one man’s pit stop on the road of life. Performer Joe Jurd fills the interior of a 1969 Buick Skylark with his physical and emotional self. Introduced by director Kelly Hargraves, who also created First Run Features’ two-DVD dance compilations.

Boy
Rosemary Lee & Peter Anderson, UK, 1994; 6m
Considered a dance film classic, this solo turns an ordinary boy into a superhero, as he moves with stealth and grace through a dramatic coastal landscape, responding to this empty universe, manipulating it and conjuring up his own imaginary world.

Motion Control
Liz Aggiss & Billy Cowie, UK, 2002; 8m
A brilliant spoof by a heralded team from Brighton.
