Program 8: New Ideas/New Shorts
Series: Dance on Camera Festival 2008
Director: Various, Runtime: 71

Aprop
Aitor Echeverria, Spain, 2007; 6m
Sleep interrupted by the brush of a familiar touch. The sigh of that voice inviting you to play. The most everyday gestures become, at close range, an extraordinary dance.

Shake Off
Hans Beenhakker, The Netherlands, 2007; 9m
Prince Credell solos in this HD recorded dance film, made in one continuous shot. Powerful athleticism and bold surprises lure the viewer into a dynamic world that teeters between the impossible and the real. Prince Credell will appear onstage on Jan. 11.

Morning Herd
Rick Harvie, Australia, 2007; 8m
A clever comic insight into the battle of a farmer (the terrific Ross MacDonald) as he wrestles with the imaginary confinement of his animals in his yards. Introduced by producer Adam Hayward.

Descent
Noemie Lafrance, US, 2003; 5m
Canadian-born dancer Noemie Lafrance made quite a sensation with her site-specific installation “The Clocktower,” featuring 12 women positioned on each floor of a 12-story stairwell in the NYC courthouse. Descent beautifully captures the performers and processes behind this daring artistic experiment. Introduced by the director.

Folies d’Espagne
Philip Buiser, US, 2007; 7m
A mysterious woman appears in court, where manners and reputation are essential for survival. A rule breaker in decorum, she must ultimately be put back in her place. Created in collaboration with dancer/choreographer Austin McCormick, winner of DFA's Young Choreographers Initiative. Introduced by the choreographer who, with a small group of dancers, will perform live on Jan. 11.

The Inn of Floating Imagery
Kathy Rose, US, 2007; 8m
Much-admired video artist Kathy Rose uses herself to create the characters in this autobiographical piece, sometimes employing masks from the Noh Theater to vary her persona. The resulting animation, constructed in the manner of puppetry and collage, is a sea of richly colored figures floating and flying, accompanied by eerie sounds. Introduced by the artist.

Car-Men
Boris Paval Conem & Jiri Kylian, The Netherlands, 2006; 28m
Four well-known dancers do a playful takeoff of the famous opera, turning it into a metaphor for speed, stillness, motion and age, while saluting the slapstick of the silent-film era. Czech-born choreographer Jirí Kylián and director Boris Paval Conem made this film in an actual coal mine in the Czech Republic. Dutch composer Hans Otten added original music to the Bizet score. The key prop in the film is a scrap car reminiscent of the futurist Czech Tatra of the 1930s.
