24 Hours in the Life of a Woman / Vingt-quatre heures de la vie d’une femme Series: Dominique Delouche: Ballet Cineaste [July 23-27, 2008] Director: Dominique Delouche, Co-production: France/WestGermany, Release: 1968, Runtime: 86 The glorious Danielle Darrieux is a chic French woman, no longer young but still captivating. She watches a man consistently loose at a gambling table and becomes attracted to him. The man (Robert Hoffman) is a young draft dodger—it is set during the First World War—with a gambling habit. They are mutually attracted and she tries to reform him. Set among the luxurious chateaux and gardens of a chic resort, the narrative, adapted from Stefan Zweig’s novella, reflects a 19th century mood of romance and nostalgia. Not a dance film, yet full of movement, gesture and music, it could well have been one. The film was shown in the 1968 New York Film Festival and selected for Cannes but ultimately withdrawn due to political pressures imposed on that festival. This year it was shown in Cannes, along with other films that had suffered a similar fate. Rarely seen stateside, this should prove to be a cineaste’s delight.
