Director Kim takes the story of his earlier The Insect Woman and re-imagines it from the point of view of the wife. Mrs. Kim has become successful through real estate ventures, while her husband languishes in a minor position at a publishing house. One day, Mr. Kim wanders into a bar and meets Myeong-ja, one of the hostesses. Instantly drawn to her, he seduces Myeong-ja, finally getting over the impotence that has poisoned his relationship with his wife. An arrangement develops that allows Mr. Kim to divide his time between the two women, but when Mrs. Kim learns that Myeong-ja might be pregnant, she decides she wants her husband to come back home. In the years between The Insect Woman and Carnivore, director Kim clearly did some reading of Freud; Carnivore is at times a riot of psychoanalytic themes and imagery.
