Goryeojang Series: Infernal Machines: The Films of Kim Ki-Young Director: Kim Ki-young, Country: South Korea, Release: 1963, Runtime: 110 A young man, Gu-ryong, hopes to marry into a family with ten brothers. But when the brothers learn of a prediction by the local sorceress that Gu-ryong will wind up killing them, the brothers attack, leaving Gu-ryong crippled. He ekes out what living he can, but a terrible drought has descended on the land. Again the sorceress comes out with a prediction: the drought will only end once Gu-ryong takes his ailing mother up to the mountains. At first he pays no attention, but as tensions rise he’s faced with a stark choice. Recalling the Japanese Ballad of Narayama, Goryeojang is one of Kim’s most beautiful films, every inch of the CinemaScope frame pulsating with life. Note: The print to be screened, the only version in existence, is missing a few brief scenes.
