Promise of the Flesh / Yuk-che-eui Yak-sok Series: Infernal Machines: The Films of Kim Ki-Young Director: Kim Ki-young, Country: South Korea, Release: 1975, Runtime: 105 A remake of Lee Man-hui’s Late Autumn, Kim’s Promise of the Flesh begins as a prisoner, Suk-yeong, travels with a guard to visit her mother’s grave. On board the train, Suk-yeong becomes acquainted a handsome young man, Hun. The guard, noticing that a genuine affection seems to be emerging between the two, allows the couple a few hours of privacy to explore their feelings. Hun decides he wants to marry Suk-yeong, but the innocence of their initial encounter grows increasingly compromised. The film shows Kim’s great talent with actors. He guides his two leads through a constantly shifting landscape of emotions, as their relationship moves from flirtation to love to despair to, finally, a haunting melancholy.
