Campfire / Medurat Hashevet
Series: Israel at 60 [May 28 - June 5]
Director: Joseph Cedar, Country: Israel, Release: 2004, Runtime: 96

"Offers an outsider an intimate portrait of family members living in uncomfortably close proximity and straining against one another during a difficult period of transition." - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Set in 1981, Campfire focuses on a young widow, Rachel, looking for another chance with love while considering a very new and different life for herself and her two daughters. Her friends are planning to found a community in the West Bank, and Rachel hopes that becoming part of that group will give her life a sorely missing anchor. Meanwhile, older daughter Esti carries on an affair with a soldier, while her younger sister Tami is making her own furtive, tentative forays into romance and sex, courtesy of the teenage contingent of the group that Rachel wishes to join.

Joseph Cedar, the New York-born, Israeli-raised director of last year's Oscar-nominated film Beaufort, creates a rich, revealing portrait of a controversial moment in the recent past that had long-term consequences for the future. The always-excellent Moshe Ivgy appears as Yossi, a stolid if unexciting bus driver who may turn out to be Rachel’s new love interest after all.
