Late Marriage / Hatuna Meuheret
Series: Israel at 60 [May 28 - June 5]
Director: Dover Koshashvili, Release: 2001, Runtime: 100

"Loud and confrontational, full of love and despair." - J. Hoberman, The Village Voice

"An accomplished and daring work, funny, poignant and disturbing...This is marriage without love, the home as velvet-lined prison cell, and Kosashvili's command of tone and shifting moods is so sure-handed that the transition seems as natural and daunting as death itself." - George Robinson, The Jewish Week

Zaza, a handsome Tel Aviv bachelor, is the despair of his mother Lily, whose Old World customs brought to Israel from Soviet Georgia include the pressing need to find a virgin bride to marry into the family. The trouble is that Zaza is already passionately involved with Judith (Ronit Elkabetz), a divorcee and non-Georgian—and thus utterly unacceptable to Zaza’s parents. Such is the domestic situation in this ribald, dark and subversive comedy that pits tradition against modernity.

Director Dover Koshashvili, himself a Georgian-born Israeli, casts his own mother as the determined and formidable woman who forces her very reluctant son to make a choice he would rather avoid. Screened in New Directors/New Films 2002.
