Thirst / Atash
Series: Israel at 60 [May 28 - June 5]
Director: Tawfik Abu Wael, Country: Israel/Palestine, Release: 2004, Runtime: 110

Palestinian cinema, much of it co-produced by Israel, has emerged over the past decade as an important new voice on the international film scene, as evidenced by Tawfik Abu Wael’s award-winning Thirst. After Abu Shukri's (Hussein Yassin Mahajne) elder daughter becomes the subject of rumors and accusations, Shukri and his family escape to a completely inhospitable patch of desert to create a new life for themselves. But when he embarks on a doubtful scheme to run water from a nearby stream to their new dwelling, a whole series of family resentments emerge.

Tawfik Abu Wael’s extraordinarily impressive first feature—beautifully photographed by Assaf Sudry—is an intense, moving study of traditional authority crumbling in the face of circumstances way beyond its control. The bold, stark visual compositions give the film a mythic quality, and the non-professional cast is sensational—especially Mahajne.
