Ushpizin
Series: Israel at 60 [May 28 - June 5]
Director: Giddi Dar, Country: Israel, Release: 2004, Runtime: 90

"Groundbreaking! A warmhearted vision of marriage among Hasidic Jews." - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"A vein of Jewish humor not often seen in the movies." - J. Hoberman, The Village Voice

An unexpected hit both in Israel and around the world, Ushpizin is the story of Moshe and Malli (played by the real-life couple Shuli and Michal Bat-Sheva Rand), new adherents to religious orthodoxy. The couple spends the Sukkot holiday in their traditional wooden hut, praying for miracles that might bring them a child as well as “holy guests” to share their temporary abode. At least one request is partially answered: Two fugitive criminals invade their space, one of whom happens to be Moshe’s old friend from his pre-religious days. Soon the couple’s faith is tested.

Actor Shuli Rand, who also wrote the screenplay, was himself a popular star in Israel when he left the business a decade ago and embraced religious orthodoxy. His screenplay, approved by his rabbi, offers a fresh, affecting look at a community that has rarely depicted itself on screen.
