Open Roads: New Italian Cinema
June 6 – 12, 2008

Over the past few years, a new generation of Italian filmmakers has emerged, defined by neither a political position nor an aesthetic approach but unified through a spirit of independence that has allowed them to break away from old models and genres. While some of this "independence" has been forced on them––the collapse of the old industrial structures of the Italian cinema has required filmmakers to truly make it on their own––this spirit is also indicative of the myriad backgrounds, experiences and influences contemporary Italian filmmakers bring to the medium.

Now in its eighth year, Open Roads has become a leading American showcase for the best in new Italian cinema. The filmmakers featured in this year’s edition continue in that spirit of discovery and exploration that has, in many ways, guided the series. Some of the finest recent Italian short films will also be screened, as we rediscover the pleasures of an old friend—Italian cinema.

Buon Appetito ~ dinner & a movie!
Your ticket stub from any screening in Open Roads gets you 15% off a great meal at Nick & Toni’s Café (100 W. 67th St., btw Broadway & Columbus).

This series has been organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center together with the Ministero per i Beni e le Attivitá Culturali (Direzione Generale per il Cinema), Filmitalia, Cinecittá Holding in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of New York and SNGC. Special thanks to Alitalia, American Continental Properties, Apulia Film Commission, Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimó, Comune di Cesena, 41 Parallelo and Rai Corporation for their generous support.
