Blue Planet / Il pianeta azzurro
25th Anniversary Special Retrospective Screening
NY Premiere
Series: Open Roads: New Italian Cinema [June 6 – 12, 2008]
Director: Franco Piavoli, Country: Italy, Release: 1982, Runtime: 88

Blue Planet is the most interesting film seen during the past few years and the most fascinating from a cinematic point of view, due to the way the author observes the world which interests him, the world of nature.” ––Ermanno Olmi

Blue Planet: poem, concert, journey into the universe, nature and life. Not …Truly a different vision.”—Andrei Tarkovsky

We’re delighted to present a legendary film coming to New York for the first time on its 25th anniversary. Franco Piavoli, a former painter and one of Italy’s most important experimental filmmakers, creates in Blue Planet an extraordinary ode to nature. He gleefully invents his own approach to cinema, creating a work built on rhythms and textures that presents the harmony and the contrasts between human activity and the physical world surrounding us.

Godfrey Reggio, director of Koyaanisqatsi and a great admirer of Piavoli, will introduce the film. Anthology Film Archives will host a retrospective of all of Piavoli’s feature films June 12 to 15. Blue Planet will run at Two Boots Pioneer Theater beginning Friday, June 13.

This screening is co-presented by Giuseppe Bruno-Bossio in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of New York; Provincia di Brescia; Fondazione Banca Agricola Mantovana; and Fondazione Aida, Verona.
